Why the last day matters

You must apply before your card or visa expires. There are no extra days: if it expires on a Saturday, apply by Friday. If you apply in time, you stay legal while the ministry decides, even after the card's date has passed (what if your card expires mid-renewal). If you miss it, you lose that protection.

The window opens 120 days before expiry for a long-term residence permit, employee card or Blue Card, and 90 days before for a long-term visa or a permanent residence card (Act 326/1999, §47, §60 and §117d).

What to prepare

• A valid passport. If yours expires soon, renew it first.
• An appointment at a Ministry of the Interior office. Book it as soon as the window opens.
• Proof of accommodation and of your purpose: your job, studies or family tie.
• Health insurance covering the new period, if you're not in Czech public insurance (which insurance you need).

The exact list and fee depend on your permit: employee card, study, family. Keep the confirmation you get when you apply.
